Born and raised in the deserts of the Karoo, South Africa, it was here Marais was brought up on a family farm. Despite it's removed isolation, from a young age Marais was inquisitive about exploring art.

It was at the age of 7 when he heard the 'click' of a cameras shutter and crack of the lights, he realised he wanted to be a photographer. He later moved to London to study photography, where upon graduating, he began his photographic career.

It is Marais relaxed attitude that is at the core to his approach to work, and what he draws upon in his creation of the set's environment. This staple attitude has allowed him to create environments he believes produces the best results that permeate on through to the photographs. It is this outlook and approach that has had him work with commercial, editorial fashion and advertising clients for over 15 years.

Selected advertising clients include Adidas, Austin Reed, Hackett, Cesare Attolini, DHC, and Code 8 Beauty. Marais has also shot commissioned editorials for Vogue, Marie Clare, Grazia, GQ, Men's Health and The Rake.

Marais works between London, Berlin, Shangai, and New York.
